I got a new belt for the tiller on my simplicity 7016, the old belt worked but it was getting really worn and weathered so I thought I would replace it before it lets me down in a time of need. I removed the old belt, then it rained several inches so I didn't bother putting belt and tiller on till it dried up. Anyway, fast forward a week to so to today, I put the new belt on, all looked good, drove it out to the garden, turned on the tiller and the belt started smoking. I noticed that the belt is rubbing the metal guard bracket thing under the main pulley on the rear of the GT, I believe I have the belt on correct, anyone have a picture or something that shows how the belt goes on, I downloaded several manuals for that model of simplicity and for that tiller, but nothing shows how it goes on.

This pic is from an AC 716 manual. I'm thinking it's the same.

That looks like a older model of tiller, mine doesn't have the idler pulley in the middle

Here are a couple pictures of the tiller that I have

Gonna need the model # and I may find a manual for it. Tractor model may show the tiller in the manual.

It looks to me like you are missing an idler pulley.

I found this manual for the tiller, but it doesn't show how the belt goes on, I will get the numbers when I have a chance here in a bit.

Thanks for all the help.

(the pictures are of the same tiller I have)

I smoked a new belt on a mower deck once, it was a big craftsman with a lot of pulleys, idlers, etc underneath the tractor.  Turns out I had misrouted the belt over a sharp, sheet metal guide clip that i didn't see the first time, moved the belt under the clip where it was supposed to go and it worked fine after that, good luck

Ok I figured it out!

I guess whoever put the belt on originally got the wrong belt, they went around the tension pulley for the mower deck, I got a belt about 3 inches shorter and it works perfectly.

Sorry for all the trouble and thanks for everyone's help!
