I am wondering if anybody knows exactly what models of twin-cylinder tractors they had produced in the years 1978-84?

I know the 148-916A (4-speed transaxle), 148-918A (variable-speed transmission, aka "Sixteen/Four") and 148-995A (hydrostatic transmission) were the first three when they started doing these late in 1977 for the 1978 model year, however the twin-cylinder was also available for vertical-crankshaft applications (401700 series), and I am guessing the 760, 780, 820 and 830 series were the first such examples.

I know what the engine model/type numbers are for the 1981 and older machines:

401417 0126-01 = for all 16 HP horizontal-mount tractors with any transmission except hydrostatic

401417 0131-01 = for all 16 HP horizontal-mount tractors with hydrostatic transmission only

401707 0134-01 = for all 16 HP vertical-mount tractors with any transmission except hydrostatic

401707 0135-01 = for all 16 HP vertical-mount tractors with hydrostatic transmission only

421417 0146-01 = for all 18 HP horizontal-mount tractors with any transmission except hydrostatic

421417 0143-01 = for all 18 HP horizontal-mount tractors with hydrostatic transmission only

1982 to 1984:

401707 0630-01 = for all 16 HP vertical-mount tractors with any transmission except hydrostatic (1982 only)

402707 0155-01 = for all 16 HP vertical-mount tractors with any transmission except hydrostatic (1983 and later)

Thank you,

Ben (OldLawnMowerMan)

Man, YOU seem to be all up on these, so why are we asking?  Needing a particular part or just curious?  Don't think you'll find any better info than what you already seem to know. Good Luck!

You may find some more info in the MTD manuals in our Manuals Section. There are several excellant MTD Shop Manuals. They are filed in atleast two places. Good Luck, Rick

I'm trying to help folks like you as well regarding this.

Apparently, the 421417 series was a one-year-only (1980) engine, so therefore any 918 or 995 from 1981 (as in 141-918A and 141-995A) would have originally had a model 422437 series engine with a type number under 0500.

Ive bought my first tractor and its one you've listed. 1980 yard man 18hp hydrostatic twin cylinders opposed Briggs and Stratton. Fairly impressive machine! Model 14995-0 serial 41-013-0291. I'd love to find more implements and a parts machine.

I have an older MTD tractor that has a label on it that was painted over and from what I can read it says

141-995-095 L120D.  I thought it was a 1998 model but someone in a different post indicated that it should be older than 1993.  Does anyone one know what year this model is and what does the L120D stand for?  It is an 18 HP Cenex which I know the 095 indicates a Cenex brand made by MTD.

Any help would be appreciated.

This file is the MTD model numbering scheme. Likely a 1991.

Just looked closer at the document that deciphers the model number information and wouldn't the third digit of the 141 which is a "1" indicate that it is a 1981?

Not sure when first year of the 995 came out but yes, it could be a 1981 according to the chart. Sometimes an "A" is added for the next decade but I have seen some listed without. That is why I said it is likely to be a 91'. Hard to tell without some pictures.

I attached one photo when I purchased the tractor a few months ago and the other picture since I added aan old Johnson loader to it. Still curious as to the year that it was built so I hope this helps identify it.
Thanks

I DL some manuals from the MTD public domain site, http://manuals.mtdpr...m/mtd/Public.do

The 81' is not available there but the 91' is. The 1980 manual is listed so maybe between them, you can determine for sure if it is an 81'.

Type in the model number 141-995 and serial number 1 to get the list. Type in 140-995 and serial number 1 to get the 1980 and 1990 list.

I think yours is an 81' but they do look similar.
