I got a GTV16 that runs great.  Im looking for a manual for it.  The one already in the manuals section is not the correct one.  Its shows there are 2 idler pulleys on the Varidrive bracket.  Mine only has 1 pulley.  I believe the number is

#917253727. I found this number from Sears parts website and verified from the image that the brackets are the same as mine.

That is odd. I looked up that model at Sears Parts and it is the same as the 917.253725. I have found manuals for the 917.253721 & 724, which is what we have here. The manual # is 100778X. Have to snoop around for that one.

I'm wondering if it was a 1 or 2 year design issue, because the idler is a flat idler but it has the belt running on the v side. It all looks original.

These style GTV's were only made from 1981 to 1983. I have both a 917.253721 and a 917.253724, thinking those are '81 & '82 models. Yours could be the '83 model.

I took a stab at adjusting it. The variable pully works more now. I still have to pull the clutch pedal back up somewhat after pressing it. Think I got the wrong belts. Is the engine side belt a 1/2 or 5/8.

From what I get through NAPA, both belts are 5/8".

Engine- 7953J = 5L680W

Trans-   7954J = 5L400W

At full adjustment the 1/2 belt dosent come all the way to the top of the variator pully.  So i assume its wrong.

We seem to be talking apples/oranges here, varidrive/idler pulley - two DIFFERENT items.
VariatorUnit-a.gif  VariatorUnit-b.gif

...The first shows nearly the same gap in both belt areas. The second shows the gap wider in the right side. the amount of tension on the belts moves the center to speed up or slow down the drive...

pics/quote credit to K108Cub - somewhere out there in the ether... :poke:

maybe if you post a couple pics of EXACTLY what you are speaking of...
there is a VARIATOR there...
AND
there is a FLAT IDLER there
overview.gif
but the flat idler pulley is NOT the variator...

is your unit maybe an LTV16?

My buddy found a GTV11 for me on CL, GTVs not real common around here, so burned up the road gettin' there to check it out, the letters on the side of the unit WAS GTV11,
BUT, don't know who or when or how,  :wallbanging:
just know it really wasn't, it was an LTV11, go figure...

okay, was maybe leading you astray, it IS a GTV16,  :D
but sorry, I don't have that manual, even on any of my old hard-drives, not anywhere to be found, maybe one of the members here will chime in...
at sears, I did find this:
55   Sheave variator           .                Parts #: 101434X       We're sorry. This item is no longer available.
57   Lawn tractor ground drive belt     Parts #: 7954J
.           .            .            .                    Substitution: 583776601       $ 14.69 In Stock
63   V-belt           .            .                   Parts #: 7953J           We're sorry. This item is no longer available.

#63, primary v-belt, short - NLA,
#57, secondary v-belt, long

adjusting the linkage for the variator is VERY critical, you'll find you need to go back over it a couple times to get it right, and, getting the proper belts is just as critical, just because they say they are the comparable interchange is not saying they really are   :deadhorse:

You could download the pics and the part numbers from sears to make up an IPL for yourself, to be able to at least compare the numbers called for on your tractor to see if they are comparable to the manuals that are available.

did confirm that the variator is the normal center-sliding sheave unit,..

hope that helps...

Yes it is a GTV16.  the Manual ending in xxx24 has an l shaped idler bracket with 2 flat pulleys the go from the Variator to the trans.  Mine is different.  Manuals ending in xxxx25 and xxxx27 show a straight bracket with 1 flat idler pulley and the adjustment is with an arched slot and long spring over rod.  I need to get the correct 5/8 belts. But is is running and the variator works somewhat.
