I finished dismantling the 57 I bought for parts. Got alot of good stuff off it, probably the same stuff everyone else has. I decided to see what the rear axle looked like inside, as I've never torn one apart. Left brake drum came right off, right side , we had touse a big puller to get it off. It would move back and forth 2 inches and stop. Got it off and realised the problem. All the pawls were missing in the hub assy and it effectly was in nuetral. Both sides were like this. The butcher drilled a hole thru the drun and axle shaft, a poor hole at that. Put a bolt thru and it became a one legger rear. When he drilled it, he created burrs and the drum could not slide off. A real hack job! I know the right side stayed on because of the bolt, but the left side had nothing. there is a groove on each end near the end, like a thin snap ring could go there to retain the drum. Anyone know? I'm curious. Good thing I was not depending on this rear to be good.
