PUlled the valve covers off of the Vanguard and the valves open and close as I would expect.  Now I am curious about what appeared to be the loss of compression.  Hmmm

Just pulled the plugs and dropped long screwdriver down into the plug holes.  The right piston (as you look at the front of the engine) moves fine but the left piston does not move.  Ding ding ding!  We have a busted rod!!!!

Messed with the Command and I cannot turn it by hand.  I suspect it is in rough shape inside.  One plug had oil on it.

Check that the flywheel magnets aren't loose and hitting on the stator! That was what happened to my 25 HP! I stuck a breaker bar on it to turn it over and found that out. As bad as they were tore up, I believe they all were loose and one came off, taking the rest out and bending the stator.

Thanks Kenny!

I will try that later today if time allows.  It it happened on one I am sure it could as easily have happened on another.

Oh, another surprise on the Command is how much heavier it is than the Vanguard.  It was more than my 5'6" 165lb self wanted to wrestle out of the back of my Jeep to the garage floor.   :oh_shucks:

That 25 HP was all I wanted to handle for sure. Since it is a vertical shaft, I found good hand holds. I'm a little taller, but about the same weight.

The seller loaded it for me and said it was much heavier than the Vanguard.  I worked the Command to the back of the Jeep and then gave it a big hug and placed my hands on the back to the muffler mounts.  The rest was a very slow and intentional move to use my legs and not my back.  In hindsight, I think moving the Command was easier than lifting my 3 year old daughter who constantly moves when I pick her up.  LOL

Removed the.muffler from the command and compared the spacing to the vanguard. If the under hood space allows this will be my first choice on the 318.

Pics of the Command muffler and the Vanguard collector that will be used to make the piece work together.  The muffler should clean up pretty well using a wire wheel followed by a couple of coats of Deere Blitz Black paint a la rattle can.

That should work! I used a Kawasaki muffler on my JD 265.

When I initially saw the pair of engines on CL, the Command muffler in the pic was the one that I thought would work.  Now I need to see if the muffler will fit between the hood supports and I can get the muffler output to line up with the hole in the side panel.

Today I cleaned up the parts I am keeping from the Vanguard 16 that  I ended up parting out to use as part of this re-power.  If I play my cards right the parts sold from the Vanguard 16 will cover the cost of the parts to do the repower.   :D
