The 6" bolt that holds the steering wheel on would have been a good clue, but I never looked at it. I backed it out and pulled the wheel off and sat it in the seat.

I was wondering as I thought it might be slotted rather than screwed on. Splined works also. Glad you got it apart. Hope the rest of the project comes out well.
