On Saturday night I was having a few  whilst lost in tractor thoughts and realised that I am a bit confused (doesn't take a lot) about the ignition switches that should be connected to three of my tractors. Also what options I have for replacing two of them.

My 1962 RAM has a good switch and the parts list show it as a 1713255, which I believe is the switch used for most magneto tractors including 600-1000. A previous owner has replaced the switch on my 1961 RAM with some oddball item and I don't have the key. The switch on my 1964 EK7 has been replaced with something even more strange.

When I looked up the parts lists for the 61 RAM and 64 EK7 I was expecting them to both quote 1713255 as the switch, but they don't. Apparently, for the RAM I need 1712905 and 1715471 for the EK7. As both the originals are missing I haven't got a clue what they should be.

Does anyone know what the differences in the switches are? Will any magneto switch work for both tractors and what recommendations do people have?

Ignition switches may look the same on the outside but the internal connections vary considerable.  Either have to get the right one by part number, or if you can get the internal connecting contacts at the 2 or three positions and match that up with another brand switch.  Hard to do and not a good chance that will work.  I got lucky once and could use a NAPA switch.  Rest I had to go byt the part number.  Suppliers on here may have them in stock.

Your 1713255 switch was a simple on/off to ground out the magneto

I stock replacements for those below:

The 1715471 is the same style clum brand key switch except the difference being this key switch needed an extra terminal to activate the starter generator .

A replacement I could offer to that NLA switch would be the Indak 1717255

I am unsure what the 1712905 is and will have to further look into that one

The 1712905 could probably be replaced by the 1713255 switch.  ....The electric starter  was activated by a push-button, so only the magneto needed to be grounded to shut the engine off.
