Where to buy a drive shaft for a GT 16 48 inch mower deck? The one I have is just a little too short and an internet search seems to tell me that the mower deck drive shaft is longer than the snow blower shaft. Also the tractor engine dies when I engage the front pto. Any help?

Look on ebay and be prepared for the sticker shock.
As for the engine dying, there's most likely something wrong in the safety circuit.
There's a link in here to the manual and the electrical troubleshooting.

yup, that is a bad thing about the Ariens line is their PITA safety cutouts, seems there should be a better way. I have 2 of them driving me crazy right now. Took a break from mine to do other things in the garage.

Agree with above. Is the seat switch connected?

The seat switch is shorted with a wire that I disconnected and then tried to start my tractor. It would not start so I reconnected it and all is well in that way. The PTO still kills the engine. Where are the other safety switches? How many? There are two PTO switches. Could I just use the rear PTO switch? There is no rear PTO installed.

There's the seat switch, park switch, 1 or 2 pto switches, and depending on the model ether old transistor board or the newer time delay interlock.
With the engine running, in neutral not park, and you get off the seat, does it die? Continue running if you sit back down quick?
Bypassing the old transistor board is simple enough. I wrote how to somewhere in here. That's how I've done my loader tractor beings the transistor boad went bad.
Bypassing the time delay is an issue I have yet to figure out.

It has never died when I got off the seat.

I have not looked at your links yet but after unplugging and cleaning the PTO switch and ignition switch I found a very burned part on the board.

question about the seat switch;

I have a couple of good seats here (not Ariens but I don't care, can't see that when I'm sitting on it)  that do not have the seat switch incorporated. I know about the hour meter running constantly if the seat switch is bypassed,  how could I use the seats that I have laying around on a setup that incorporates a stupid switch?

What about a toggle for a switch on there? But then you need to remember that.

Ultimately if I fix this the way that I want to the whole thing will be rewired and the idiot proof system will be moot. Someday.
