New member with a charging problem on a 12-17

Help please. I have a 1984 12-17. The battery does not get charged while running the tractor. I have a new battery (550cca) and it needs to be recharged after each use. The ground is good. I can not locate the regulator/rectifier. Where is it located? Suggestions and help much appreciated. Thanks, Jeff

I believe the voltage regulator is mounted in the engine air shroud.  Seems it is on top to one side. It is a finned square little aluminum block with just the fins sticking up higher than the tin maybe? OR, still in tin somewhere, not on top. Follow the wires. Should be three to it. One to tractor making it 12 volt and other two from the engine making AC currents. This box changes AC to the 12 volt for charging.  Check all your wires for corrosion and breaks in the system.

Hi jeff, welcome to the group, as GL posted its on the top of the fan housing on the RH side from the tractor seat, look uinder the intake manifold it sticks up about 1/2" is 2" w and 2.5/3" long held on by 2 bolts as GL posted it will have 3 wires connect to it. The center wire should be the charging wire +13 to 14 V DC, you caqn run the engine and check the voltage with a voltmeter if it registars 13 to 14 VDC then it ok and the problem is in the wire from there to the panel (have you checked to see if there is a fuse and that its good?) if its not making 13 to 14 VDC then it could be the voltage / rectifier regulator.
