That amount of gearbox play is not all that excessive.  I have some that still function at probably 12:00 to 2:30 sort of wear. I would pull the rear cover plate and see if its just a worn key and you may head off further problems down the line.

Check the locking bolts on the steering arm under the tractor. If loose, that can cause a lot of play. The steering components are external, so it's easy to see problems.

Where's it at?  I agree that the attachments are worth it. If you have the time, it would be a fun project.  Time.... Another project...
