Finishing up the 3400 Ford utility tractor that I had sitting for years and finally got running last fall . Decided to paint it and fix some issues figuring it would be done early spring . New ignition switch and starter solenoid last night so tonight was going to be easy . Give it a shot of starting fluid to make sure she fires off then put gas it . Everything ready ,shot of starting fluid ,, nothing , checked for spark , nothing , wire going from coil to distributor had cracked insulation and wires almost broke through . Fix that still just a weak to no spark . Took the cap off to check the points , gap good , cleaned with brake clean everything looked good ( keep that in mind ). Still no go , the wife comes out ,told her it has weak spark , she said " bad coil " maybe but put a new one on a few years ago in a failed attempt to get started . By this time even the little battery charger wasn't keeping up so I got another battery to jump this one too . Now we got her spinning good ,,, still a weak spark. Now the wife says " did you check the points?" yep I said " how about the condenser ? ,, Silence,,,,,,aw crap! Last fall when I was trying different things to get it started I mounted the condenser externally and after moving the tractor closer to the garage I removed all the temporary wires clips ext. Went into the garage , got the condenser that was sitting on the work bench , installed it and one shot of starting fluid it fired off . So even though I looked right where it should have been ,next to the points it didn't dawn on me it was missing . Thanks to my wife of 31 years

Good story. Please tell here I really enjoyed it.

Most young people don't know what a set of points is much less where they go.

Good that she could help out. My wife has no idea what points are; much less a condenser.

I don't think my wife would know  the difference between the points and condenser but does know there are in my old tractors and if there not working right they don't get spark .

My wife couldn't install anything but she has heard me talk enough about T/S and knows there is usually a sequence to follow or check.  So she is my check list and it works.  I've also found that by describing to her what the problem is and what I have done a lot of times, like you ALC, I will see something I didn't see previously.

Even when I was working and programming computers I would be stuck on a bug and I would walk her through the code and the proverbial question would come out, either does case matter or does spelling count.  There would be my problem.  Usually one letter out of place.
