Hook the volt meter direct to the battery terminals with an ON/OFF switch.  Keep it out of the regular wiring of the tractor.  Question is  why a volt meter in place of an amp meter?

Why not just replace it with another ammeter? The cost is relatively the same between the 2 gauges, and no monkeying around with extra wiring.
