Now that the weather has finally cooled off the MRS and I been looking forward to our frequent camp style fires out back in an old tractor rim that is now a fire pit.  We have plenty of wood just going to waste and this helps clean up the small stuff after I cut firewood for the shop stove for this winter.

The other day while was gathering supplies for just such a fire I grabbed this box of matches off the shelf in the shop.  When I opened it this is what I found.

How this didn't burn my shop down I'll never know.  There was another box of identical matches with this one and they are fine.

I should buy a lottery ticket!

They don't even make matches like they used to.

Suggestion: coffee can with emery cloth glued to it.

I am guessing slow burn due to lack of oxygen in the box... but yeah thats lucky.

Wow, that's a new one.
That would've been a fun one for the arson investigator.

Any chance of grinding sparks getting to that box.

I know a farmer that had a box of those go off in his front pants pocket inside insulated coveralls while operating a swather. Said things started happening pretty fast but was able to get the fire out without starting a field fire or getting burned.

It's true, smoking is bad for your health.  :smilewink:

Dad used to smoke when I was growing up, he carried kitchen matches in the inner front pocket of his bib overalls.  He kept them with the heads all the same direction for ease of getting one out when needed.  Twice, I saw him welding when a hot splatter hit the matches, he just grabbed them with his usual leather gloved hand & held them out until they were done burning.

I thought it was funny!!!   :wallbanging:    :D

Welding or grinding sparks could have wound up inside the box.  The were on a shelf behind the workbench where I do most of my wor....  playing.

How dumb do you have to be to put a striker where the matches can come in contact with it?

I kept this and the recall notice, not sure why? But, yea really dumb design. I can imagine an accident, but it is an aluminum case with 'O" rings. Who knows. Stored safely here.

It'd make a great gift for someone you don't like.

I would like to find Strike Anywhere matches, but it seems you have to send away to get them anymore.
