Well pleased with G14 today

Well after a long time I finally got to use the G14 in anger so to speak. SWMBO wanted some long lived bushes out of the garden, one with a 3 inch stem to it. I had told her that the G14 would pull it out and it pulled all three bushes out with ease. Finally connected up the rear LED lights as well!.

 

After was a test drive around the garden for gearbox noise and can say that the removal of end float on the main shaft along with additional oil has quietened it down significantly. This coupled with sound deadening (underseal) on the main body parts has made it a very quiet tractor which will please the neighbours.

 

So just now need to get the paintwork sorted as am not happy with it and then get the decals done as well which is proving troublesome. Just waiting for the new throttle control knobs from Rick to arrive then on next trip away will send the body parts etc away for proper painting so that colours are all the same and panels straight. 

 

Why does the hood never line up with the bulkhead/instrument panel  correctly? Never seen one that does!!

When I rebuilt my H16 I also had a hard time getting the hood to match up with the dash. I couldn't remember if the bottom of the hood/grille mounts on top or the bottom of the hinge on the frame. Either way didn't help. What I did do was shim the dash forward. On the top row of mounting bolts I placed a washer between the dash & the tower box. This caused the dash to tilt slightly forward & closed the gap between the hood & dash. Be careful tightening these nuts because if too tight they could brake the mounting ears on the dash. Hope this helps.

I think I need to pull it apart again but initial observations suggest the gear box position also has an influence as this controls the position of the tower in X direction. As the steering column only has movement in Y and the base chassis position is fixed I think to get it right is going to mean cutting away the tower around the steering column and elongating the tower holes in Y then I should get a perfect alignment. It's always amazed me why they never align correctly. The 1254 I recently picked up is a good 15mm over the dash.

I went out & looked at mine & I made a mistake from what I told you earlier. I placed the washers on the bottom row of bolts instead of the top row.

You may be able to align the hood a bit more using the bolts that hold the main hood hinge to the front axle as well as the hood itself. I found loosing all those bolts and positioning the hood would get it pretty close. Also, the console tower plays a big part. There are slots in the lower holes where those tabs go onto the tubes. You can do some adjusting there as well.

Ah ha, I did wonder!!

I'll do this on Sunday. I only need about 3mm and it should fit perfectly then. I then need to work out why the hood needs to be spaced so far forward. I've also fixed magnetic tape to the dash panel to stop movement during running because of the vibration through the tractor during normal running.

Yes I can see that and the tower is already back at its max rearward adjustment but having said that I could do with a few mm more so the tower cutaway to the steering column doesn't clash.

That's a very tidy job you have done on the G14.

Thanks Andrew. Mechanically and electrics are now all sound and virtually back to original. Now it's just cosmetic and hidden modifications/improvements and acquiring implements.
