I have tried to find a good video showing how to mount up a deck under a JD317 and so far nothing. I did find some on the 318 but some of the stuff does not look the same.

If someone here happens to know of a link showing the mounting and leveling of a 317 deck would you please post it??

First off... which deck do you have?  WAs it on the tractor before?

The 41 deck uses longer draft arms than the 48 deck.  Belt used depends on deck and engine too. (IIRC there are total of 4 different belts used depending on the combination)

Thanks guys. I have a hand full of decks, I am pretty sure I have the one that came from the 317 but still unsure about that.
The motor is a Onan and I will have to get the numbers off the decks and post them tomorrow.

For what it's worth - a deck for the 120/140/300 series machine will have the drive pulley above the center spindle.

Harlan's hook-up will also help!

Travis, I hate to sound stupid but what does it mean to have the drive pulley above the center spindle??

Yes, the drive pulley is on the center spindle as opposed to the SF/200 series which attaches to a separate pulley towards the back of the deck.  The PTO belt comes down from the crank, thru the mule drive, and attaches to the large pulley that is above the belt cover. This is a 41 (same dimensions as a 39 from the SF/200 series)

Another for reference - 48 which is the same dimensions as a 47 from the SF/200 series

Trav1s,

Looking at both of your pictures I think I see that in the first picture the attaching arms at the tractor end only have a hole in them, the second picture the arms have the quick attach as part of the arm.

Am I correct in thinking that the 317 only uses the arms like the ones shown in the first picture??

If so then I only have decks that have arms like the ones in the second picture.

That difference is related to the age of the tractor.  The first pic is the mount type used on the 120/140/300/312/316K and the other is the 314/317 design.  You can swap arms to either deck (design is the same) to work on the tractor.  I believe you can swap mounts on the tractor too but am not positive.

Mine must be a earlier 317 because the quick connects are on the tractor frame.
If I had the other arms to replace the quick connect arms on my decks I might be able to make one work.
Not sure where to get those at around here though.

My 120 and 312s have the earlier style which work fine for me.  If that's what ya got then run it.

Between the two types, is there a difference in length of the lift arms??

Not that I am aware of since that would impact belt length and JDParts makes no reference to arm type when ordering belts.
