I'm just a beginner at welding, still practicing on scrap.  I got one of the auto-darkening helmets

and it does seem to help, I use the old style and loose my place when I do the "head flip".

I still haven't figured out how those auto darkening units are faster than the speed of light???

They are not faster than the speed of light. You will also find that there are times when you are trying to weld around or behind something and the lenses will not darken. Pipe fitters will know what I'm talking about. I was worried about my eyes if this happens. I was told that the lenses still protect your eyes against UV damage.

Although I don't know that for sure there must be something to it as I can still see.

So far the biggest issue with this one, is it doesn't return to clear sometimes. Otherwise it's been awesome

I no longer lose my place during the flip, and I can use my left hand to steady, instead of beimg there to flip the lens

Now I'm really confused.  If they're not faster than the speed of light, how

do they react to the first burst of light from the weld and darken before it hits your eyes?

This ought to muddy the waters for you.  :oh_shucks:
