That is the usual question asked when you go somewhere. My answer is " I'm still vertical". The responses are all over! Some folks just use a 'factory' answer. But a few take a bit before they answer.  Guess they are digesting what you just answered with! Then they say 'that's a good thing'! Love to mess with folks!

Some days I just say "I have been better" always throws them for a loop.

I use " I woke up on the right side of the grass so things aren't too bad". Most of us over 60 just grin and agree. Good Luck Staying Up, Rick

Had a young lady today that posed the question. Her initial response was 'That's great'. But a bit later, she says "That's a good one! Still vertical!" Let's you know if they are really paying attention to their customers!

If you think about it as you get older the "just fine thanks" might be polite conversation but for a lot of us would be telling a fib.  I usually respond with "still able to stand upright and take on nourishment - everything else is bonus round" which for me in the game of life is my way of saying I am alive and not complaining - things could be a heck of a lot worse.  The old saying "there but for the grace of God go I" comes to mind as I look around and think about acquaintances and friends who have just been diagnosed with a life changing disease or who are no longer able to stand upright or take on nourishment as they are in a better place.  The wisdom that we gain as we get older is something that young healthy people sometimes have a hard time comprehending.

You should ask them the secret of life if you really want to mess with them.  To me the secret of life is death for without death there can be no life - cannot have one without the other on earth.  The real question should be what is the secret of living - which to me is hope (that tomorrow will be better than today)!

"Still upright and breathing" An older gentleman told me that one day and it stuck with me. I try not to be so down so I usually answer  "I'm great" no matter how I feel.

"death would be an improvement"

because that's usually how I feel.
