I would use 80 Weight or 80-90 Weight gear oil.

You can't use gear oil in it because it does not have a check or fill plug.  Originally, my manual states to pack it with 4 ounces of wheel bearing grease.  I filled mine half full of John Deere cornhead grease.  It is a flowing grease, 00 I believe.

there was a lot of gear noise so i pulled the thing off, it had some thin grease in it, looked black and old.the gears all looked good, bearings felt good. cannot figure out the gear whine, its pretty loud.when you push the input shaft in and turn it you get a little noise, then you pull on it and turn no noise. there is only a small amount of end play. any ideas? also i cleaned it out, so i can tell its actually gear noise not bearings

Those gear boxes are noisy as heck, they are straight cut miter gears.  Mine are quieter after the corn head grease.

well i packed it with grease, i couldnt find any bad parts when i had it cleaned.gears looked good, i fired it up and 75% of the noise was gone. the grease that came out of it  was real thin, almost poured out.
