That's funny, not battery, but wired! AND, I bet looking at size of that motor on those, was plenty strong current too.  Guess you wouldn't use on a wet day and you better hope all grounding is in order.  This is back when electricity was kinda a new item and they were finding ways to use it for many things I would say.  Too many chances of problems and accidents happening I would say, ha!

Sounds scary to me also--Europe has  220 volt 2 prong outlets standard with no ground --ZAP  that can bite you dead real quick.
