I picked up a Bolens QT yesterday.  The gal had a MW tractor with mid mount deck.  Engine was a vertical shaft.  Didn't pay much attention to at as it was hot and wanted to get loaded and on my way.  Then I got to thinking about it.  She said the engine was running a month ago but needed ignition.  Asking $50.  Cannot find any info on a vertical shaft Wards tractor.

Trying to run down the photos she had on CL.  Will have to call her and find how it is listed.  Hood is not like the photos above.  Nose is straight down the sides.  Bottom of the side of the hood goes straight back as I remember.  Montgomery Wards was on the side of the hood.

That's because they didn't use Vertical Shaft engines until Lawn Boy bought them out in 88 i think. 80 and under is Horizontal Briggs, 77 is the first year for it, under 77 they used the Briggs/Kohler Single Cylinder

Gilson/Wards did not use Kohler engines, they are Briggs only as was the Gilson S series the Wards tractors were based on.  Gilson did use Kohler engines in the garden tractors they built for Ford after '83.  Verticle shaft Gilson/Wards came out as a cheaper line in about '80.  We had a Gilson built 16 HP Twin Wards my Dad bought new in '81.  Biggest piece of junk I have ever tried to mow with, couldn't keep the deck functional more than one season.
