I'm looking at replacing the gear oil in the transmission of my 1254. I've read that I could use a GL-5 spec oil, but I've also read that a GL-5 oil could harm the bronze parts inside and that a GL-1 spec is best. What's the right answer? Does this oil also work in the PTO gearbox of the mower deck that I have?

Also, there is no freewheeling pin on the right axle, as the pictures show. Anyone else come across something like this? There is one picture from the front of the tractor, and one from the rear.

Finally, the left rear wheel is leaking oil, which I'm assuming is just a seal. Does this oil come from the transmission, and is it ok to run it like that for a little while until I can get the parts?

You will need to use a mineral 90 weight gear oil in both trans and Gearboxes

I have never seen those axles on any tube frame before! , Someone must have cobbled something together!

Almost looks like hydro static hubs but I dont know....

Is there anyone in Ontario that knows where to get GL-1 Mineral Gear Oil?

I did a bit of Googling and the best I can come up with is this:

http://www.comatmoto...m/#!about3/cbfk

They are a distributer and don't appear to sell direct.  You might give them a call and see if they can tell you who a local retailer might be.

I know that NAPA has Gl1 oil and I can find it on the US site, but the Canadian site's search function it so crappy that I can't find it there.

You might call you local NAPA and see if they have it.

A lot of the early Ford & Ferguson farm tractors use 90w GL-1 gear oil.

As Dave said, NAPA has it in the USA, as well as Tractor Supply Co. (TSC).

Did you check with Canadian Tire?

I have had a look around. I found a company that deals in Chevron lubricants, and they can supply a pail of GL-1 at $95 CDN. I think it's cheaper to just go to the US, and grab a gallon or two from NAPA; as I'm only an hour or so from a border crossing.

Canadian Tire doesn't have anything that has a GL-1 spec. I've emailed a couple of tractor dealers near me, and no success there either.
