I'll probably use the Walbro just to test things.

I have had Magnums come to me either way with walbro or Kohler carbs. I have 2 M12s here that have the same model and spec numbers but are a couple of years apart both from identical mowers and among them 1 has a 30 on it and the other a walbro. Now I did not get either from brand new but each runs fine with its respective carb. I was surprised to see that the one with the Kohler carb is a 30 and not a 26

Those M series have to be about the best thing Kohler made except for the Walbro carb. I'd go with the #30.

 

I agree on the Walbro, go with the Kohler  #30

For now, I got the Walbro mounted up. The throttle shaft is worn, so it's just a temp. The carb that was on there is a Walbro LMK. # 124 0806 2005314. With the solenoid in the bottom of it, had to be off a much newer engine.
