I'm trying to locate a magneto for a Tecumseh engine in a friend's Troy Bilt Horse Tiller.  This is the 1st Generation TB Horse, without the PTO disconnect, etc.

I believe the engine is original to the tiller.  It has factory electric start.  The number stamped into the shroud is a little hard to read, but what I can make out is:

HH60 105114G SER 10580

The "6" in "HH60" may be a 5...

The tillers in good shape, but isn't getting any spark. He had a small engine place look at it... they took off the shroud, etc. and said it was the magneto, but they weren't available anymore.

Please let me know cost, and shipping to zip 84041.

Thanks,

Smitty

I haven't seen the coil... the engine was partially reassembled when I looked at it, including the flywheel reinstalled.  Unfortunately, I don't have time to work on his engine right now... I was hoping to find a coil and have him get the small engine shop install it.

Took out the book and your coil will look like that with your spec#

With it being electric start thats where things get tricky, the coil was sold with the ring gear for the starter but like the shop told you they are NLA, I wonder if you could just use the 30560A Coil in its place but you may loose your electric start.

the whole magneto rarely fails, usually it's just the points and condenser within... even those coils were pretty reliable,  I have worked on too many Tecumsehs with that setup to count, and only ever had to replace 2 coils maybe 3,

and one was on account of my cousin trying to tune one up himself and only after "it only ran a couple minutes after I finished it"  and I had to redo it, I found that he put the condenser on upside down which made the wires rub the flywheel and also chewed the little coil wire off that goes to the points, too short to have anything to splice onto.....

Before going any further, check the flywheel magnets. I've seen a bunch of them where the magnets came off. Good Luck, Rick

I guess with the electric start it needs an alternator as well, right?  I think he wants to sell the tiller as he as another TB Horse, maybe he'll be satisfied with recoil start... I'll talk to him.

no, with the 30560A,  you will not lose the electric start, that is just the coil itself not the whole mag.

the mag itself was usually shown bare in the parts listing as I remember and a seperate part number from the coil, points, condenser. The mag "windings" itself is what had the charging coil built in if needed, and they both used teh same 306560 coil.

It is held onto its laminated core by a sort of "bail" clip on the front side of the coil,  immediately opposite where the spark plug wire exited the back side.  You pop the bail clip and slide the coil off the lamination, slide the new coil back on.

So, two parts numbers have been mentioned.  If I understand correctly, the 30560A coil can be used to replace the mag coil and/or the ignition coil.  Is that correct?

Thanks,

Smitty

306560 was a typo, no doubt.

The correct # is 30560A, which was the replacement for the earlier 30560.
