917.254422, Onan 20HP Twin...Turn key on, indicator light comes on, try to start and light fades immediately.

Hook up charger with 50 amp boost and it starts.

All terminals etc. are clean.

Once it is running for a few minutes and turned off it will start with no problem.

This battery is less than 2 years old and only used to start, electric pto and deck lift, headlights never used.

Get a voltmeter and check battery voltage. Should be about 12.50- 12.75 if it's close to full charge, when cranking it will drop to around 10v or so. If it's a lot lower the battery is suspect. Check connections at battery, clean and tight? Is battery low on water? If t's not the battery could be a high resistance connection in the starting circuit or starter current draw too high.

Sounds like the battery has gone bad even though it's only two years old.  Giving it a boost with your charger seems to give it just enough power to start the tractor as well as running the tractor for a few minutes gives the same power boost.  If the tractor charging system wasn't working, then it shouldn't restart after running for a few minutes.  Probably if you let it sit for an hour or more after running the battery won't hold a sufficient charge to restart. Sometimes you just get a bad one.  I've had batteries go bad that soon before.

Missed the 2 year old part. Sounds like a bad battery all the same. :wallbanging:

There could be a short in the system that slowly drains the battery. Disconnect the negative cable and see if there is voltage when everything is off. If there is a voltage reading, you have a short somewhere. Good Luck, Rick

Those cheap 200-240cca batteries only last a couple years in a full sized GT.They MIGHT last 4 years in a LT because they don't have to use 100% of the cranking amps to crank a smaller engines over.

The big Onan twins take a Really good healthy battery to crank over anyway especially if the starter is a little stiff like the one on the Sears GT18 Hydrodrive is that I'm working on.The little 240cca battery out of my Troy Bilt won't crank it over without some help.

You get what you pay for with batteries.Buy a cheap one and you will only get a couple years out of it.Get a good one you Might get 10 years out of one depending if you keep it topped off.

I've had really really good luck with a good Deka battery.Had 1 last just over 10 years before it froze and busted. It was the older version of this one.410 CCA $55

How do you store it over the winter? If it's left to discharge and freezes in an unheated garage, it won't last long.

Thanks for all your replies. As most have stated: everything points to a bad battery. 20$ a pop, guess I got what I paid for. It's for better half's mower and she sez it's worth it for her @ 20$ for 2 years.

You can get a GOOD interstate with 450cca for $80 and never have to worry about turning over that Onan.  If it will run the glow plugs for 30 seconds and then start my Kubota 3 cyl diesel it will start that Onan.

Our local Atwoods (farm supply) has L&G sized battery's in the 420 CCA range. Those do well with the Onan's. $50.

I had to come up with a battery quick for the TO20 we took to the tractor show.
Grabbed the spare 420 we got from TSC and vroom, vroom every time.
Think it was 55

My Sears battery (same series, but a 360 size) is about 4 years old now with no signs of slowing.
