If I don't shut my fuel valve off under gas tank, gas will fill up carb and drip on the floor. Does this mean gas could be entering crankcase and mixing with oil too? Carb rebuild is next.

sounds like the float is sticking.

I would get a kit and clean the carb good and set and float by the Kohler manual.

I use a 11/64" drill bit to set my float after put in a new needle valve

usually the gas enter though a bad fuel pump into the oil.

but gas from the carb can enter the breather tube then goes into the oil, but that is very rare.

your float may be punctured or have hairline cracks in it. I had a k301 that would seem fine then after a while would exhibit the same symptoms you are having. My float was filling with fuel and the holes only showed in a pot of boiling water, after locating all the tiny leaks and soldering them the problem was gone. Just my experience hope it helps.

If it was overflowing carb, could it cause an occasional puff of smoke or an occasional backfire? It is a Cub 1250 with the Walbro carb. I've tried adjusting it with no luck. Gonna go ahead and clean carb good and rebuild it. I did notice plug was black a little wet.

Does the oil smell like gas?

I think it does maybe a little? If there is, it doesn't seem like much. Carb is getting pulled off today and rebuilt. Like someone else said, I bet float has a hole or not adjusted right.
