I am the proud owner of a Ford LGT 16D. It set in a garage for 6 years without running. I drained the fuel tank, replaced filters and new battery. Followed the operating manual for bleeding the fuel system. Turned the key to the on position without starting engine so the electronic pump could operate (I did not hear the pump operate...Am I suppose to?)  So I turned the key to the off position, then I heard crackling noise like wires burning, then white smoke from back of instrument panel. I could not visually see any burnt wires. Any Ideas?? Not to familiar with Diesels. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a 14D, It might be the indicator for the glow plugs.  it may have a lot of dust on it.

Thanks, I will look at that. Does the glow plug indicator power up when key is in the on position? I did not have the key on the Heat position. When I saw the smoke, it smelled like burnt wiring or rubber, but I did not see any burnt wires.

No the glow plugs do not power up when the key is in the on position.  it only power up the glow plug in heat and start position only if it wired correctly.  When I got my 14D it was not wired correctly. I would check my wiring.

Got it going today! It runs great. Bad wiring. I drove it around checking everything out and noticed that the reverse in not working. Any Ideas? I have not changed the fluids and trans filters yet.

 Welcome to the forum! Depending on the year will tell which parts are needed. NH still lists parts for this machine.

Here's a parts diagram to figure that out.

I had smoking wires when I got mine too! Mine had a bad engine ground so, when it would crank the starter would get ground through the voltage regulator. That many amps going through a small gauge wire...you can imagine what happens!
