Hi all. I have a craftsman model 917.273500. I am currently fixing it and it has no spark. I have the fenders and seat removed to be painted. My question is with the safety switch on the seat currently disconnected due to seat being off of the machine , will this keep the coils from making spark. Neither coil is making fire I replaced the diode that Honda puts on the ignition system and still nothing. I am thinking it must be a switch somewhere because neither coil is firing. I have cleaned the flywheel and gapped coils at .010. Plugs  at .30. I am also jumping the starter bypassing the ignition switch since the seat is removed. I am missing something?

not sure about the Honda coils. on the Briggs and Stratton magneto coil if the small wire is grounded the coils will not fire. Just remember if disconnected and engine starts the coil must be grounded for engine to stop.

Well its working as it should, with the seat switch disconnected and bypassing the key switch there is not suppose to be spark jumping the starter only energizes it, to get spark the ignition switch must be on and the seat safety switch connected.

Hi jackcu, tell more about the engine was it running recently, or sitting for awhile, does it have a low oil cut off? This is a vertical shaft engine can you post a picture of it?

Ok you could try finding the wire on the low oil sensor and disconnecting it at the sensor see if that will let it spark if that doesn't work  remove the wire at the mag coil and see if it sparks, it sparks with the low oil disconnected the sensor maybe bad or need to be cleaned or it could be a shorted wire from the sensor to the ignition system likewise if disconnecting the grounding wire from the coils works there is a bad wire in the wiring harness if no sparks then mostlikely its bad coil / mags.

Just another quick question you do have the brake pedal down and locked when checking for spark?

Please make sure the brake is set and the PTO is off.

Both of these will have the same effect as if the seat is empty

Hi ok did you try pulling the ground wires off the coils yet? I'll upload an owners manual for the engine it has some wiring diagrams, it looks like the engine may not have a low oil shut off just a warnimg light.
