I've got a friend with a Zero Turn mower with Briggs engine that was given him because after running for a few minutes it would quit.  It's apparently been sitting in his pole barn for a number of years.

Last night I get a text from him that he got it running.  Only problem is when he shuts it off there is a shotgun-loud backfire and do I have any ideas.

I sent him information on the anti-afterfire solenoid speculating that it probably got gummed up and is stuck open.

Turns out a mower "mechanic" he knows told him his mower is too small for his lawn and will shut down in less than an hour.  The "mechanic" told him if he cut the tip off the anti-afterfire it would make the engine run longer.

We were doing this by text and I had other things going on so I'm not clear on whether the anti-afterfire was the cause of his shut down problem or if he ruined a perfectly good one before finding the real issue.

This reminds me of a cute saying I just saw elsewhere: " Ignorance may be an obstacle to knowledge, but even worse is the illusion of false knowledge".

And what was this "mechanic" smoking?  Maybe to many fumes from the gas tank?

If it just quits because its to small for the yard then maybe its the mule drive, because everyone knows mules are stubborn.

What I don't know if it's the same mechanic that told my father-in-law not to use the electric starter on his snowblower because "It turns the engine too fast.".

Oh, no! Never open your mouth during one of those procedures. You might get an endoscopy , too.

No kiddin'.  He complained that it wouldn't start.  We went out to the garage and I asked where the power cord was.  He told me the mechanic told him not to use the electric because it spun the engine too fast.

Turns out though, that if you did spin the engine too fast it would start.
