October 2015

I bought that tractor mentioned in the Kijiji ad and found this forum and the original post while looking for another rj to restore.

Restoration has been relatively smooth.
For the most part it's been take it apart, clean it,  put it back together.
The tractor is in incredible shape for a 60 year old tractor.
The hood is dead straight - no dings or gouges or holes.
No holes in gas tank and it also came with the float which I have yet to hook up.
Got the original engine running last week and am starting on the belt drive system today.
Took  over a year to find original engine parts.
Still have to clean up the back end and have a look inside the rear hub.
Going to have to get a belt guard. At this point I'm thinking a reproduction is all I'm going to get.
Fingers crossed but so far so good.

Update May 2016

Engine is now running strong.
Have ordered a reproduction belt guard.
Belt drive system needs some work - ie. I have to get the right belt lengths for it.
Had a belt on it that was too short from the engine to the veri-drive to the point were I had no neutral; with predicable results.
The gas tank float has a leak but it's a tough part to find so can live with it for the moment.
Steering is good - just need to get the proper pin to hold the steering wheel firmly in place.
Replaced the gear oil in the back end  but have not opened it yet.

Some before and after photos.
Enjoy. And for the collectors in Southern Ontario keep an eye on Kijiji

So which hood decal is correct?  Did they change them in the 57-58 time frame?

P. S. Very nicely restored tractor!

jsp -333, you are lucky to have the original shower cap muffler very hard to find, and the schnacke recoil just as hard if not harder to find. I saw a NOS one sell on evilpay for 245.00 three years ago haven't seen one since, and I've only seen a few machines that used it.

Beauty '58!

Wish I had an attachment like that - might persuade me to keep it.

Love those front reel mowers
