What to look for on a Allis Chalmers HB 112?

I have an opportunity to buy a HB 112 with a tiller and deck.  What problems should I look for?  I've read that the hydro likes to leak.  How can I tell if the motor is original to this tractor?

Bevel gear box play,bad rusted gas tank, missing covers of course the usual stuff not smoking all things are greased and oils are clean

The pintle shaft likes to wear the pump housing on these, creating a fluid weep. Later models employed a bushing insert to avoid this, but there are many still just fine.

Check for steering slop and play in the bevel gears. Give the axle tube a good look for hairline cracks or damage, on the right hand side.

The HB-112 is possibly the finest warly Allis built, amd highly collectible.

Are they rebuildable? I will have to do the one in my HB212 if I ever get it running

Are the parts easily available?

Can you retro fit a bushing into the housing?

 

From what I've read, it sounds like most of the part from a B will work on the HB.  Is that true?

The HB's are scarcer in number, but aren't rare.  Because they were the hydro (user friendly) and the top of the line model (pricey, less available in the day) they are very popular.  The HB-112's seem to be more limited in supply than the HB-212's that followed, and offer a more 'Allis' looking style, with the smaller round steel wheel and flared hood.  212's differ from a Simplicity 3212 only in color, grill and seat.

They are, but require machining.  Sandy Lake used to accept your old one as a core toward a refurbished one.  $200 or so.  I've heard you can flip the pintle shaft to stop the leak for some period of time, but have not done it myself.

Thanks. I remember when it was running back in the 1990, we would fill the reservoir, cut grass for about 30 mins and it would almost be empty when we were done.

Wow!  That's pretty bad.  I had an HB112 that leaked badly...drops about 12" apart when plowing snow, but it would take a pint or so every half dozen snow plow jobs.

I would probably consider an HB-112 rare. They were not made until partway through the B-112 production. The HB-212s are much more common but even so, to find one in decent shape and complete you can expect to travel a long ways to get one or have it shipped in.
