Does the steering shaft have up and down play in it? I ask because mine did and required a 1/8" shim (washer) for the gears to mate properly.

No if I crawl under it, I can grab the pinion with my hand and moved the shaft side to side. The gear will hardly mesh when I move the pinion away from the steering gear

Great to hear the PO did not scrap it and you are getting into it already. The steering gear removal is a not so fun job but needs to be done. Glad you are the new owner of a very capable tractor.

I think it would fit. It would be the 42" three blade deck. You would need the scissors lift carriage assembly and the PTO drive shaft. Hoping other members will verify this to be true.

EDIT: (Two blade deck to three blade deck. I was thinking of my Craftsman 42")

Here is what the 42" deck for my 960 looks like. If you find one make sure to pick up all of the linkage for it. These scissor lifts were made over complicated and are waaaaay heavy. No way I would want to have to pull and reinstall that deck with any regularity, makes for a good excuse to have more tractors!
