I know this is a older post, but why spend all the big bucks on a new briggs, older kohler magnum 18 twins and single cylinder kohler k series 16 hp would be way cheaper and probably be a easier fit, especially since the 444 was a k321, and the magnum and onan are dimesionally similar, that vtwin with the shoebox muffler going to cause some problems, Im sure there all addressed, but 1600 dollars plus extras for a briggs, isnt alot of bang for your buck, just my humble opinion

Installed a Magnum 16 hp in my 444 - no mods at all - cut the plastic grass screen for the engine to slide the clutch mount through... piece of cake and the breakerless ignition is an upgrade - no doubt.

 

I'm with you on this one...

No kit - the magnum needs to have wide base narrowed as per my posting pics - hydraulics go right on - wire as needed - front clutch bolts on as per old kohler - reroute throttle and choke as needed.
