Wow this is great info. I'm new to the site and Bolens. I was given a 1668 ( eliminator 1600 ) and she cleaned up well. After a fair bit of work I now have a decent running tractor. I was on the search for a snow caster for it, and two weeks ago I found and bought a brand new never used but stored for a long time blower and pto. Could not believe my luck.

I took some time to read your article on the Bolens XL series tractors, I was not very familiar with them I had seen them on CL for sale but had really just been focusing on the tube frames. I really got interested when I found out that the 1669 from 1990 thru 1993 had the BS vanguard twin engine in it. I have had a 1998 John Deere LT166 for ten years that I use for mowing and it has the vanguard 16 HP twin in it. That motor is sweet in runs so smooth and quiet, I love it, it has a ton of hours on it and is still going strong.

I was on CL last week and came across a 1993 1669 Bolens for sale it was in good condition and the vanguard 16 HP twin had been professionally rebuilt four years ago and the drive shaft had also been rebuilt. I could not resist, I called the guy and made a deal with him and will be picking it up next month.

Thanks for putting this article together, Great Job!  It helped me to start thinking about including some of the XL series in my growing Bolens collection!
