My mate, Daniel, is working on my 1254 which got a Wisconsin engine in it. I would be grateful for any input into this please. The carb is warped and is leaking too. Hopefully trying to sort that issue out soon.


I have pasted Daniel's query below. I assume he means a Zenth carb and not Kohler carb?

Another issue with the engine is that the other issue i had trying to start it was the fuel just wouldn't go up to the cylinder (plug was dry) yet there was large amounts of pressure from the exhaust, yet not much suck from the inlet, the fuel dribbles from where the air cleaner would go but only when the engine is turning over. My conclusion is the float is fine and stopping fuel as it should, or it would dribble over all the time. Theres enough suck to draw the fuel from the float bowl but not enough to take it up the inlet and in to the engine. Yet strangely theres enough to puff out the exhaust? Having never stuck my hand over a kohler carb whilst cranking i wouldn't know if this was normal?

Not enough info given, but most likely a valve not seating properly, or a blown head gasket.

I agree with Bruce. It sounds like a problem within the block. Try adjusting the valves first. If that doesn't increase the vacuum throught the carb, you may have to look at the head gasket and valves. Download a troubleshooting guide from one of the engine manuals and follow it to pinpoint the problem. Good Luck, Rick

I agree with both of the above.  My guess would be the intake valve is not opening like it should to draw fuel into the chanber, but closes good enough to give you the "puff" out the exhaust.  Good luck with your engine.

An oddity that I experienced on two Wisconsin engines was a broken camshaft.  ....This was a bugger to diagnose the first time, as the engine would start and idle, but would cough, spit, and die out when trying to accelerate.

 

The breaks in the shafts were rough-enough that the broken pieces would mesh together while cranking & idling, but would separate and slip under load as speed increased. 

 

I'm not suggesting that this is the problem with 800UK's engine, but it is something to keep in mind, if all else fails.
