I just got a 2ed deck, 48", for parts or restore, and the drive box pulley is low enough I can't get the belt off - is this typical?

This is typical on many of the Bolens shaft driven mower decks.

Bolens/Iseki 17350

I'm guessing that during the rebuild I'll raise the box/pulleys so the belt can come off easily. Shouldn't take much 3/16" maybe.

What model machine?

You'll have to atleast loosen the gearbox to get the belt off/on

As mentioned above just about all models of Bolens required you to remove or loosen the gearbox to replace the belt
