So this past winter the nut that increases or decreases the amount of lock on the differential screwed itself loose, and came completely off the axle.  It ended up actually going through the snowblower attachment, which was quite unexpected and noisy.  I put it back on a few weeks ago with no issues.

Reading the manual, it appears there is supposed to be a stop of some sort so this can't happen.  Is there a C-clip or something that is supposed to be on there somewhere?  After the never-ending winter here in Wisconsin ends, and I pull the wheel weights off I will have a better look at it, but just curious what exactly I should be looking for or at.

Thanks,

Aaron

Should be a snap ring in a groove at the end of the axle.  Might be a good time to check axle end play while your at it.   good luck.

As stated there is a snap ring that holds it on - should be a groove at the end of the axle.

Ya check your end play while your at it.

Mine wasn't locking up without really tightening the nut and it would still slip a bit. After adjusting the endplay My freewheel hub was no longer loose and the locking hub worked really nice. You could set it to open dif, limited slip and full lock without having to beat on the locking nut with a rubber mallet.

Here's the step by step on hot to do it.

:ditto:

End play is critical on these machines and is unfortunately overlooked

Snap rings I have plenty of but you may be better off going to a hardware store unless you need other things as shipping is more than the snap ring LOL

I checked the end play last spring, I will check it again while I am in there anyways.

Thanks for the info.  I am headed to the dreaded Harbor Freight tomorrow, may see if they have an assortment kit.  Not the first time I have needed a snap ring and didn't have any.

Harbor Freight is evil.  I am the same way Eric.  Go there for 1 thing, come back with 10 other things you didn't realize you needed until you get there.  The really sad thing is, it's even worse if my wife goes with me.  Pretty sure I am going to own the small cement mixer some day just because she really wants one.  No idea why.  She has never worked with any concrete in her life.

BTW, Tomorrow, Easter Sunday there is a 25% off any item coupon.  I shall be using it, just not sure what on yet.  Also getting a free flashlight, magnetic parts holder, and screwdriver set.  I am sure they aren't high quality, but free is free.  If it's crap then I will toss it.

First, thank for this topic to remind me to adjust my axle. Hope you got your snap rings while at HFT.

Yep, an EVIL place. I avoided the Easter sale knowing I have blown my parts/tools budget for the month.

Good luck with your fix.
