I started working on the 1253 I picked up a few weeks ago. After wiring everything back up when I turn the key the solenoid clicks but the starter does not turn. The solenoid looked pretty beat up so I replaced it with a generic one from the farm supply store, same thing happened. Now I am thinking that it may be the starter itself. I suppose there is a chance that it is stuck since it was sitting for awhile before I purchased it. I have never had to work on a starter before. Any tips on getting started (haha) would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Have you checked to make sure that power is getting to the started? If there is,I would remove the started and bench test it.
Here is a dumb question, are you sure the engine is not stuck ?

Also, welcome to the forum, glad to have you with us.

Yeah, I agree with 853, sounds like a weak battery.

Welcome to forum!!! Try jumping it and if that doesn't work then you might have a solenoid problem.

Just to clarify things... The original engine for this tractor is a Tecumseh..... Is that what you have in there?

Yes, it is the original engine. I had tried hooking the battery up to the charger, it showed full charge. To be on the safe side I did try jumping it as well, same result. Last night I did hooked up a 12v tester to the cable running to the starter and had no power getting there. Since the same problem was occurring with both the old and new solenoid I am now working on the assumption that the cable from the solenoid to the starter is bad. Unfortunately it will have to wait a few days as I am heading out of town. Thanks for all the help so far!
