This is a good tweak for those who like to "customize" their GUI.  :smilewink:

GUI = graphical user interface

Simply because you can.  Open source linux operating systems give the user much control over appearance if the user desires to play around with it.  This simple trick gives Ubuntu more of a familiar feel.

Not to mention the ability to add a Taskbar and a Program Menu.

Makes things a bit more Windowy without going to Mint.

Ubuntu Gnome is even easier to tweak and will do Windowsie or Macsie outta the box.  Along with Mint, either are solid choices in my world.

Think of it this way.  If someone came in and designed you a shop without ever talking to you, the first thing you would probably do is rearrange everything like tools and equipment so it would work the way you work in the shop.  People who you have never meet design the graphical user interface that you use each time you use your computer.  Most people will just go along with the flow and accept what is given them and then complain it doesn't work like the last version.  With open source you have the option of making the desktop your own, just like your shop.  I personally prefer the OSX style to have my task panel at the top with all my system icon on the launch bar and have an application (apps I use frequently) launch bar at the bottom.  I also don't like a lot of icon cluttering up my desktop. I set my task bar up so it is just barely visible so my wall paper comes through but yet I can see the fonts on it.   I also like to have desktop effect enabled so I get a 3d look on certain items.  On the other hand you may like the more windows look or some other type may work for you.

Another reason to customize your desktop is eye candy.  Make it present to look at for you.  Although Windows does allow you to do some customization it doesn't allow you to go to the same degree that open source does.  Hope this makes it clearer for you.
