The Chance Vought F4U Corsair is my favorite followed by the A1Skyraider or SPAD as it was known by its pilots,  because of the variety of munitions it could carry for ground support mission's it was slow but devastating !

A little off topic but someone mentioned destinctive sounds, I started my career as a Huey mechanic. Once you have been around a UH 1 you can never forget the sound! To this day whenever I hear a helo and it isn't a Huey I just can't stop remembering the sound they make for the rest of the day. A friend of mine was a tunnel rat in Vietnam and he likes to joke that is was the sound of survival, or his ride home depending on the circumstances!

I agree the UH-1 had a very distinctive sound for sure!  My first aircraft was the SH-3.  I was in a squadron over off the coast of Nam and we would sometimes bring wounded out to the carrier to be treated and then sent on.  My last aircraft was an SH-3 as well.  Went full circle.  Tell your friend his service is very much appreciated.
