Can you run this off a USB stick to see how it works?

I'll be watching this closely.

I refuse to update to 8.1 or W10.

I'll be needing an OS that can handle 8 cores, and stupid amounts of storage.

I think this may be interesting, but reading the article I really don't see a big difference in React versus another Distro like Mint or Zorn.  Both will allow you to use windows drivers and both will read and write to a NTFS drive (Side note NTFS is the file system Windows uses) where according to the article react can only read an NTFS drive.  Also they are using Wine as the emulator for windows so you will still have the same restrictions that you have using Wine in any other Distro.  When I see Quicken running in an OS other then Windows with no issues then I will really be impressed.

I do have to admit Wine has come a long way from when it first started.  The main issue I have seen with Wine is that they have an application running in one version and then the next version it doesn't run as well or not at all because they were working on getting another app to work and broke the first one.

I sure hope they are successful though.  I have a windows media server I would love to port over to another OS.

Jesse over on DW did a review of ReactOS this week.  Reading it sounds like they have pretty much made a clone of an older version of Window 98 - 2000.  Complete with the BSOD (Blue screen of Death) and lots of bugs.  If you are interested you can read it here.

Thx for sharing that.  I might give it a try because I can but have little hope after reading the review.

I wanted to try this with SimCity3000 so after I installed Virtualbox I tried to install SC3000 and it would not work.  I will play around with some other windows programs after Easter and let you know more about my experience.  At this point I am not impressed.

Neither was Jesse.  But it hasn't reached 1.0 status yet and in my book that means it's not ready for main stream yet and really still in Alpha.  I just think they are trying to reinvent the wheel.  There are plenty of low resource distro's out there and if they are working with the Wine project then I would assume that is what they are running to make windows apps work then just install a low resource OS and install Wine or PlayonLinux.  Or probably the best alternative is install an old copy of windows in a VM and run your app(s) from there.

I agree.  With the processing power of multicore machines and the price of DDR3 RAM I find it hard to fight something when VirtualBox and another OS takes less time, has fewer quirks, and is overall easier. Now to mind the XP key I had been saving...

I still have the original folder that XP came in and the Key is on the folder.  Also I believe it is also on the disc label.

I put my code somewhere so I would remember where it is and now I cannot find it.    :hitting_self_roller:
