Came across a Troybuilt and it reminds me of a Bolens. Did Bolens make this?

Troybuilt purchased Bolens, and 2 years later they were bought out by MTD.

These are the same as the the ST models Bolens had, this is the period of time when Troy-built took over the Bolens products, were more of a lawn tractor and not built as good as the garden tractors that were also offered, the Troy-built GTX models were the same as the Bolens Duratrac series

Only produced for 2 years; That makes it a rare model. LOL

Kind of what I thought. Lawn mower, vertical shaft engine?, no hydro, Funky gas tank! I'll pass.

The gas tank on these should be under the back fender.  It looks to be missing and some one add the tank by the dash.

Their business model was to take a Bolens, paint it red, and call it a Troy-Bilt. Then MTD bought the whole shebang, made a least-common-denominator lawn tractor, painted it different colors with different decals, and called it all sorts of brands.

Is that not the MTD business model?  90% of the tractors they make are all the same with different names on the hood.  Cub Cadet, Bolens, Troy Bilt.  They are all basically the same.

nice Bolens ST120  ,i saw the posts about the st120 & thought to be the best place to ask  a Q ,and am sorry for cutting in .

i have just picked 1 up in tatters but curious about the diff it is a weird type diff with a oil bottle above the diff , my Question is

Is this what you people call a hydrostatic diff ??

& if so are they any good ??

do they have gears or just speed pulleys ??

as its dark now & can't see under it

Welcome,

Do you have any pictures of your machine so we can ID it?

The one in the pics above is a gear drive,

hopefully i'll have a pic or 2 tomorrow but as to look at the 1 in Werzel's pic's it is the same , bolens in the same spot the st120 in the same as well , likewise the fuel tank , but mine don't have hood or engine

i have the Toro with the oil tank above the diff but the diff itself is nothing like the Bolens 1(weird ) lol

Shane

P.S. got it off kerbside today so its new to me

If it has a fluid reservoir associated with the differential, there is an excellent chance that the tractor is hydrostatic drive. a gear drive tractor would not need a separate reservoir for fluid; the gear lube would be contained within the differential. And, yes, many of the hydrostatic drives are just fine. Look for a hydro pump mounted to the front of the diff or nearby.
