917.276884 Kohler on a 2005 Craftsman fs5500.

Had a surge issue where the motor would surge and then almost die. Decided to clean the bowl after reading other related issues. Big time fail!
Took the lower part of the bowl connection off, which has 2 nuts and a wire connection at the bottom. Inside the bolts I found a spring loaded valve or a switch? The fuel drained as I loosened the nut. Attempted to remove the bowl, but was unsuccessful. Put all back together and had to reconnect the wire above the carb. Tried to start but will not even click! Is that valve inside the 2 nuts a safety or a float? Do I need to refuel the bowl? Im totally lost!

Not sure which engine you have. You can download Kohler manuals directly from Kohler (if you can get it to work) or try here: https://www.kohler-e...anual-downloads

The Engine's model # from the Fan shroud will be needed to find the engine manual in there..  I have the manual @ my home puter but I'm at work.  Look up and D/L the manual and save it to your H/D or a zip drive so you'll have easy access to help..

The valve should plug off the jet so the cylinder doesn't fill with gas and lock up when you try to start it

While the above statement is true..  Also:

It is the Anti-backfire Solenoid.  The valve closes when the key is turned off to stop the fuel flow to the engine through the main jet.  Today's engines are tuned to run lean (lower emissions for the tree-huggers) and that means they run hotter.  When you turn the key off if any fuel goes into the engine bore the hot surfaces in the combustion chamber can cause it to fire at any time.  As we all know if it fires at any time other than the intended point in the piston's cycle bad things happen fast!  Sheared keys, blown rods, broken pistons or skirts are a few examples..  Ask me how I know?  Seem them all and it ain't pretty!

So D/L the manual and if you are still confused how to get it apart fire back..

Good information! Thanks. Its my belief after reading the manual that I have a broken wire at the bottom of the bowl. I am going to order a new carb and try to replace it. I read where it is a solenoid wire, and I believe if I twisted it it may have broke, and therefore that click I hear when I turn the switch fails to click. Indicates that the wire isn't getting contact I hope. Anyone else has this issue?
