I had a similar problem with a 316. Cleaned the carb, had to adjust the float and finally changed the fuel pump ($90) which solved the problem.

If you can adjust the choke to where it smooths out then it is lean. If not then you need to adjust the governor.

Lean could also be a intake manifold problem. I had a Ingersoll 226 and it wouldnt go above half throttle without the choke! The rivets for the intake manifold popped off on the 2nd cyl. Drilled all them out and resealed and tapped for 10-32 cap screws.


Yes, I can stop the surging with adjusting the choke. I gather it's running lean? I'll have some time to tune it up this weekend. With 4 kids it's been crazy busy around here :D
