Ignition switch question

Should be pretty simple. How can I tell if my long hood pk is mag ignition or battery ignition?

IF it has the plastic connector, they are both the same connector with five wires. BUT, if you look at back of switch, it should have letter markings on it. One for battery should have an I (eye) for Ignition and the Mag kind should have the M for Magneto instead. The M only grounds the engine to shut off, the I actually cuts the circuit in the switch, turning off the power then to engine.  IF you have individual wires to it, same applies, don't mix them up if you pull all of them. Might be best to unscrew switch from panel and pull it back to engine compartment and look at it there. Might also have to clean it up some to see the letters. Mark wires if single before pulling. A little bit diff wiring for each then, find wire diagram for your set-up and go with that. or go with one you are changing to or whatever. Diagrams are on Yahoo group site, not sure what we have here. There are many shown, need to know your serial number.

Hi grahman52, if your engine is battery ignition the coil will be round like this

The coil is mounted on the side of the engine.

Re-read your post and realized you should be able to look at the starter used and whether you have a coil mounted to engine much easier. I was just thinking you had switches to compare. NO round standard coil on the blower housing with condensor on same mount bolt, means Mag. The Mag coil is smaller, odd shaped mount built into it and usually on side of the engine, kinda like the starter. There would be NO wire coming from the points box area, IF it even has that. Might be the points area, with no cover on the block and no points then of course.

Iv wanted to put a new coil and wire on, iv got a Bosch blue coil, can I still use it?

No you have to stay with the electronic coil, the blue coil would be used with battery ignition (points system)

So I'm goi g to jack this thread more. If\when the coil goes bad, how easy is it to find a quality replacment

You can not for less than about $200 to $300.00, see the e bay link I posted for a used one and that maybe a crap shot. Many convert the engine back to points and condenser (battery ignition). Kohler even made a kit to convert. That would be my course of action.
