I saw one yrs ago that had a Ford 302, one bank engine the other bank compressor.

The big V8 conversions were very common portable compressors used in the construction business.

If I remember correctly, one bank of 4 cylinders "ran" and the other bank of 4 cylinders made up the air compressor.

Yes that is how they work.I know you can buy kits to convert VW engines but not sure if any other kits are available.
