I'm a little late in posting this but last week I decided to put chains on the 850 and attach the brinly plow to it. I got everything all connected and proceeded to the garden. I lowered the plow and got about 5 feet of plowing in when I feel a jolt and hear a snap!. The tractor stops moving. I get off and see the rear wheels bowing out and the right axle is separated sticking out about 5''. So I disconnect the plow and take out the Bolens 1000 to tow her back home. I take the transmission cover off and find that the whole axle shaft has snapped in two! :bash:
No wonder why I wasn't moving LOL

This is the first time I ever seen something like this happen to a Bolens Transmission.
I got the tranny out and will be putting in a spare 3 speed I had in the basement.

Kind of hard to see where the break is in the pics

Wow that sucks Brian! Good thing you've got a spare! Sorry for the troubles you've had, but glad you're on the way to getting it back up and running!

Good thing you have a spare. Does your tractor have those locking axles ?

That's weird, those are pretty tough. Maybe there was some play there? Makes me hope mine is right, I don't have a spare.

I think this is a pretty rare thing to have happen.

Al, yeah it does have a locking differential

Although the Bolens transaxles are almost bullet-proof, the axle shaft is probably the weakest point. ......We used to keep an axle in stock, and replaced a few.

Rare to see any axle break on any make, & sure sucks when it happens. Not had it happen to me.....yet! Shows what I know about Bolens....didn't know they were worm gear at the final! Now I understand the locking/unlocking hubs!

Thats a tough axle to break. Thats a clean trans you have. Good luck with the repair.

Wow Brian, that is the first one I seen snap like that. Now you got me worried plowing with the Bush Hog LOL.

Glad you had a spare. We have some tranny parts if you ever need any.

Or this George, this one was in the D4-10 I'm restoring. Just a little more & it would have twisted in two.

Actually, it will be great to watch video of the old girl turning dirt. If we could find parts readily, I wouldn't be afraid to do anything with them. I'm a bit over cautious I suppose, but I do hope you have a great time with her.
