That didn't work! His hard drive was only an 80G. The back up file on the external HD was 169G. Wouldn't work. So I set him up with Linux. This is a computer he got from work (they are replacing some). It had a fresh install of XP Pro and nothing else. I did put Wine and PlayonLinux on it for him. He's happy! He was downloading music to a USB stick with it for the ride home! Headed that way now as the roads may get nasty once he gets into Kansas. But he has a Subaru Forester with all wheel drive.

Seems the RAM is a tad low on that machine..  If it has 512 MB of RAM is looooowww..  Your OS will hog most of it..  You can pick up new memory sticks online cheap for those machines and it will speed things up nicely..  I found cheap ones and donated them to our work computers and the performance was stellar.  Of course that is if the computer fires up..

As far as the processor failure goes check the MB for lint / dirt..  Clean things off and plug it back in and reboot..  If the problem persists try to R & R the Processor..  Sometimes a dirty or bad connection will foul up the works..  If still no workee then the MB or processor is Fubar..  Punt and drop twenty..

Won't the backup program restore individual files?

I haven't seen a way it will.

I got out the HP and took the processor out. Looked at it a put back in. I got the error screen to come up a couple times, then nothing again. If I had the cash, I found a  NIB Lenovo with Win 10 for $150. No monitor, but keyboard & mouse with it. Just too short right now to get it.

I have been researching the 'black screen' issue . Seems there are a whole bunch of folks getting the same thing, though they are finding different ways to get the puter back alive. Some are finding Win 10 is messing with their monitor driver, others are having USB issues. I did download an ISO for both Win 8 & 10. Burned the 8 ISO and put it in the DVD. Alas, that didn't work. When I turn it on, just the fans come on. The light on the DVD player blinks off/ on a few times, but nothing else happens. No sound from the HD & nothing on the monitor. I know the monitor is good as I am using it right now to see this.

Kind of hard to find another cheap computer I could use the parts on as the HD & DVD Burner are SATA.

Is it running Win 7?  I will check at the local recycler for a system without the OS.  Some snooping with the model number you posted on the first page of the thread shows the motherboards as problematic.  I am afraid you are at a dead end on this one.

So the board is a standard mATX format with makes things relatively easy.

With that info, I would try to find a mATX mobo and swap stuff over then do a clean install of windows.

A bit of digging on Newegg gets a board to you for $50 give or take $10 depending on what you get.

I originally had Win 8 on it.

The mobo is a Joshua-H61-uATX. I wouldn't have a clue what would fit. I don't understand all they are talking about on these things. Plus I may need a processor. Do they come with those?

I went to Newegg and looked through there mobo's. All these have an LGA 1150 or 1151 socket and mine has an LGA 1155. If I have to buy a processor and video card to go with the mobo, I may as well find another working computer to buy. I saw another HP s5-1414 on CL the other day for $300. Wish I had the money when that Lenovo came up!

I knew the socket was a variable but forgot about it.

Yeah, that's the problem finding anything for it.

Yeah, that's the problem finding anything for it.

And that is my frustration with the pre-built machines from HP/Compaq, Dell/Gateway, and most other manufacturers.   There is enough proprietary variation it makes for a challenge to revive them.

That being said... maybe a mITX board would work... I will do some digging.  :smilewink:

Kenny, unless you are looking for a windows box you may want to check out this box  I think the pricing is quite good and the reviews so far are quite good, plus it comes with my favorite OS. :rocker2:
