Woke up around 3:30 this a.m. to that unmistakable odour---- skunk! Since Asia, the Tibetan Mastiff, was out on guard duty, I figured "good for you, you big dummie" and went back to sleep. Sure enough, this morning the yard still smelled awful, but Asia was pretty much unscathed and quite pleased with himself. After breakfast I went out to chore, the yard smelled even worse and Asia was staring intently at the corner of the deck. Around the corner waddled the biggest, fattest skunk I have seen in quite a while. Back upstairs, grabbed the .22 pistol, back down in a flash, and shot the "stinker" not ten feet from the back door. I'm thinking that was my biggest mistake in while, lol! Now the place really stinks, but at least the skunk is gone, and I know the dog isn't gun shy. He laughed and laughed when I picked the darn thing up with a plastic bag and disposed of it. Pretty smart dog after all.

That's one less 'country kitty'! Sorry for the odor. Hope it snows soon and clears the air!

In the past I have shot them in the rectum with a 20 gauge shot gun and there was no stink. Use low base shells so you don't mess the skunk up too bad. Seems to pack their scent glands up around their adam's apple as I have picked them up by their tail afterwards and there was no stink. I would imagine a .410 would work also but a 12 gauge would probably make a mess out of a skunk at close range.

Just walk up and kick em in the rear, they will fall over and play dead.... maybe that is what you do to 'possums, I cant remember.

It might work for skunks too?

Around here, if you see a skunk in the day time, its probably rabid. Never touch them. There are still people dying of rabies. Good Luck, Rick

A skunk has to arch his back to spray, just like a tome cat.  If their back is broke they can't spray so that shot in rear would do the trick, but not sure I want to be on that end of the situation.  .22 hollow point with about 3 quick shots at the back does it real well.  We have more problem out of Opossum.  I have shot 5 from under the bird feeders about 10' from the front door at night.  Security light gives just enough lite to see through the scope.

How did you fix 'em? Roast them? I bet they were good!

I always figured that the last thing a shunk did before it dies is "squrt"!

My brother calls it "high speed lead posioning"!
