Hi All--

I haven't been on the forum for a while... been a busy summer...

I have an option to buy a Steiner S20 (forerunner to the 420) from a college nearby.  It has a cab, dual wheels, snow blade and rotary broom.  It's powered by the Kubota WG650 gas engine.

The tractor won't start, and I need to tow it out of it's storage area and up unto my trailer.

Steiners (and at least some Ventracs) had the same Peerless hydrostatic transaxles as the Ford LGTs and early MTDs.

Does anyone know how to release the hydraulics so it can be towed without damaging something?

I've searched for 3 days now, and can't find any information...

I'd like to pick this up today or tomorrow... can anyone help me out???

Thanks,

Smitty

If i'm reading this parts manual correctly it should have Hi/Lo/Neutral leavers on both rears.

Pages 46 and 47 show shifters on both axles. This manual is for a 420.

Thanks, Eric. You've got a better eye than I do.   I have a copy of that parts manual, but couldn't find the info in it...

It's reasonable to assume that with both levers in neutral that it can be towed...

Hi Smitty. Keep us informed on how this turns out for you. Should be a good investment when it is up and running properly.

Will do.

I picked it up late this afternoon, but it was dark when I got home, so I couldn't go to a car wash and clean it off, etc.  The suggestion about putting the drive axle selector in neutral did the trick... she rolled easily... I was able to use my cheap HF portable electric winch and pull it up onto my trailer. Here's some pics of it:

The college I got it from also had the operator's manuals for everything except the blower... I'll be posting them on the website soon.

LOL!  You know me too well!!

I did a lot of searching on the 'net for info on the engine, which is a gas version of the Kubota D600 3 cyl diesel-- it was also used in the Cub 2082 and various other machines, but other than service parts I couldn't find anything. The owner's manual doesn't list engine parts.

So. yeah, I was up way past my bedtime !!

I'm not suggesting anything but there are a lot of D600 diesels around.  :smilewink:
