That is the original filter, being 40 years old it likely has holes or is broken off which was common
Like chubien mentioned its strange your getting alot of stuff from the plastic tank.

I am not sure on the cause of the contamination either. I think maybe the previous owner used regular gas in it or left it part full when he parked it and it left "varnish" deposits in the tank? I have been running premium in it and maybe that has loosened the deposits? I dumped some Seafoam into it before I ran it last weekend (still running it with the filter backwards for now). I will let it soak for a bit, then run it for a bit next weekend, then replace the filter with a new one (installed the right way around this time).
